Basic 2D Preview

The Beta 1 preview of Basic2D contains the majority of the API's planned functionality. This includes:
  • Rendering of 2D sprites to a Windows Forms Control surface using DirectX
  • Animation timing and sequencing
  • Audio playback of multiple simultaneous sounds using DirectSound
  • Full keyboard, mouse, and gamepad input using DirectInput
  • Asset management of audio and image resources
  • Game Engine implementation with versatile GameObjects and Scenes
Rendering, audio, and input functionality can be utilized independently of the GameEngine, or the GameEngine can be used by itself to provide the other functionality.

Additional planned features include:
  • Asset bundling/asset pipeline
  • Additional GameObject implementations (e.g. Backgrounds)
  • Default input map for common keyboard/mouse/gamepad input layout
  • Any other essential functionality discovered to be missing in beta

The Basic2D beta 1 release is stable and performs moderately well. The Renderer is capable of drawing several thousand animated sprites. The GameEngine is capable of handling 1000 GameObjects with collision, and a couple thousand more without collision.

Any application referencing Basic2D will also need to reference the DirectX managed wrapper assemblies, as well as modify its App.config file. These details are outlined in the ReadMe.txt file associated with the download.
